During the Second World War, some French selectors tried to save the race of the extinction by outcrossing to Persan and British Shorthairs. However, the original cats Carthusian monks who were imported in the United States came from the French countryside, and only of these cats were employed by multiplying programs to produce and preserve the normal statute of the present pedigreed Chartreux. This beautiful race was brought to the United States by the efforts of John and Helen Gamon who were invested in finding and acquiring the beautiful cats.

At this age, the selectors can determine the quality of the kitten (pet, selector, exposure). With the total conformation of the kitten to the standard of race, the degree of curve to the ear is a principal factor in the determination of quality as follows: first degree (pet), second degree (selector), and third degree (exposure) being the most desirable curve with the ear, emulating the gracious curve of a full crescent. The furnishing of ear (tufts of hair) ventilating outside the ear accentuates and increases the curved ear further. The ideal American curve is an average animal and alarm with an elegant aspect and a soft and open expression complimented by their remarkable ears.
